Chaodu occurs very commonly during Hungry Ghost festivals, where both Buddhists and Taorists practice salvation rituals for their ancestors. Taoists lay out food and drinks invite their ancestors to be preached to by priests, imploring them to get them get out of their anger so they can be released from purgatory.
